Job Summary:
This office and field position requires advanced knowledge in the areas of science and/or engineering obtained through specialized intellectual instruction and requires the ability to work independently on assignments requiring the consistent exercise of discretion and judgment to analyze, interpret or make deductions based on varying facts or circumstances. This position is primarily responsible for planning, selecting, coordinating and implementing scientific and engineering services to fully address the scope of work on construction projects in accordance with company standards, regulatory criteria, and contractual obligations. This position prepares and reviews the initial design concept and components of the final design of advanced systems for upgrade.
Requirements and Education:
- Independently identify, analyze, and recommend engineering alternatives/designs and can identify and resolve complex engineering problems and develop conclusions and innovative recommendations
- Assist with the preparation and peer review of conceptual and final designs for advanced mechanical system upgrades in coordination with other team member engineers
- Consult and collaborate work with project manager, superintendent, health and safety, quality control, other engineering disciplines, and contracts representatives to properly plan, coordinate and ensure progress of deliverables per the approved budget and schedule
- Coordinate all aspects of mechanical engineering reports, submittals, RFIs, designs and specifications with the client
- Select and apply appropriate mechanical technologies and cost-effective solutions to upgrade the advanced mechanical systems to meet project objectives and integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure
- Able to plan and execute moderately complex engineering projects including design, contract administration, and implementation
- Plan, prepare and issue project and field submittals within approved budget including but not limited to pre-construction plans, design documents, testing plans, shop drawings, field submittals, operation/ maintenance reports, closure reports and as-built records
- Apply industry standards of practice for selected technology, adhering to regulatory codes and standards, national/ local standards, and company SOPs
- Identify, address and communicate technical and operational risks relevant to the selected project approach and technology to the Project Manager
- Participate in team project meetings
- Take a lead role in ensuring proper installation of mechanical components and providing support to other construction personnel
- Author RFQs and assist in procurement and identification and evaluation of technical and specialty subcontractors, consultants, service providers, and materials to accomplish scope of work
- Report to the field to perform, inspect, and/or oversee fieldwork
- Oversee and review work of personnel, subcontractors and consultants to ensure compliance with approved plans and acceptable tolerances
- Ensure that appropriate and required testing is completed by qualified personnel using properly calibrated equipment
- Assure compliance with contract requirements and thoroughly understand the measurement & payment of each item of work
- With project controls support, ensure prompt preparation of the work progress estimates and track pay quantity records and maintain proper documentation
- Evaluate, review, monitor and document results and help make necessary decisions/ adjustments to procedures
- Complete related documentation (field reports, logs, meeting minutes, online submittal sites) in a timely and accurate manner – including maintaining the project submittal log, all field inventory logs, and all daily reports
- As requested, investigate and recommend solutions in response to field changes, RFIs, and resolve issues related to the quality or applicability of installed equipment, and issues regarding system operations
- With project controls support record and track all RFIs, potential change orders (PCO), and support development of modification proposals and claims/request for equitable adjustment (REA)
- Ensure that efforts are focused on promotion of client and stakeholder success, considering both short- and long-term needs including maintaining personal accountability for adapting to organizational change for the benefit of our clients, stakeholders, and colleagues
- In addition to the duties above, other responsibilities, tasks, and deliverables may be assigned to the incumbent of this position
Preferred Requirements and Education:
- This position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering management or a related field from an accredited institution. This includes a minimum of:
- 32 college semester credit hours of higher mathematics and basic sciences; and
- 48 college semester credit hours of engineering science and/or engineering design courses
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for this requirement.
- Engineering, quality, or environmental credential (e.g., EIT, CQA, EPI) - or - PE license or ability to attain during tenure in this position
- HAZWOPER 40 Hour Certification with current 8 Hour Refresher preferred
- USACE Contractor Quality Management for Contractors certification
- A minimum of 3-6 years of experience required; two years or more of progressively responsible experience performing mechanical systems design, field engineering support, or quality control on mechanical upgrade projects
- Understands a full range of principles, terms, procedures, and practices of pertinent engineering field(s) and applies engineering principles appropriately on multiple projects at same time
- The ability to communicate in written or verbal formats with diplomacy and tact; strong technical writing skills
- An aptitude for exercising independent thinking and reasoning
- Strong organizational skills, and skilled at leading dispersed teams to accomplish tasks and activities adhering to established budget and schedule
- Skilled in achieving project objectives by properly reviewing/ inspecting work for adherence to approved technical plans, drawings and specifications
- Demonstrated knowledge applying engineering standards of practice and regulatory codes and standards to environmental and field techniques
- Proven knowledge in reading and comprehending client requirements, technical plans, specifications, drawings, and related technical documentation
- Successful track record in effectively engaging with subcontractors
- Ability to mentor and guide team members and share lessons learned
