Position Summary

RSI is recruiting for an AS&T Intern who will assist personnel in the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ESL) with setting up and running columns filled with uranium mill tailings from the Rifle, Colorado, Disposal Site. The intern will then assist with geochemical analyses of the column effluent, along with assembling, plotting, and interpreting the resulting data. The goal is to test a potential method (addition of hydroxyapatite) for reducing or even eliminating uranium mobility in mill tailings. These columns will be run for several months to better understand the long-term stability of this method. This information will be valuable when considering future remedial options at multiple sites.

Status: Part-Time - Temporary
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Hiring Range: $18.02 - $20.00 per hour. (The anticipated starting hourly is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

 

This position is required to travel 0% of the time.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist ESL staff by drying tailings material and packing columns for testing.
  • Assist ESL staff with mixing chemicals (hydroxyapatite) to inject into the columns.
  • Assist ESL staff with running columns for several months.
  • Assist ESL staff with column effluent water analyses.
  • Enter and plot resulting column data in Excel.
  • Work with assigned scientists to interpret the column data.
  • Assist with field work if/when the need arises.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience

  • Completion of 60 credit hours prior to start of internship towards an undergraduate degree in Geology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, or a related field.
  • No relevant experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Microsoft office including but not limited to Excel and Word.
  • Some laboratory experience preferred (could be class work related).

Clearance and Health Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check
  • Pre-placement Drug Screening
  • Fit for Duty Test (if applicable)

Essential Physical Requirements 

Medium: Work involves moving objects by exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an above-negligible amount and up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
