Job Title: Geotech Engineer

Location(s): Grand Junction, CO

Status: Full-Time

FLSA: Exempt

Hiring Range: $65,000 - $85,000/yr. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

RSI EnTech, LLC is recruiting for a Geotech Engineer who will be responsible for planning, developing,

coordinating, reviewing, and assessing the design of projects, including basic organization of design team, concepts, format of calculations, selection of equipment standards, system design, and preparation of plans and specifications. Interfaces with outsourced engineering companies. Provides day-to-day support to Site Leads for their assigned sites.

 

This position is required to travel approximately 25% of the time.

 

Primary responsibilities and essential functions:

  • Performs remedial investigations and feasibility studies to determine and outline projects.
  • Prepares construction drawing, construction specifications, statements of work, cost estimates for professional services, and schedules.
  • Prepares and inspects plans.
  • Provides engineer field support during the construction phase of activities.
  • Assists in providing assessments of work scope, potential safety problems and special design considerations.
  • Assists in providing technical assessments, conducting trade-off studies, and providing direction on the basis of costs, schedule, and performance.
  • Participates in internal reviews.
  • May lead aspects of a task or project.
  • Follows procedures and processes.
  • Assists with several projects at one time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

This geotechnical engineer will work on projects associated with engineering evaluations and maintenance of uranium mine tailings disposal cells previously closed under UMTRCA.

Projects will include completing geotechnical and civil analysis and design work for structures and earthworks including settlement, transient drainage in tailings, slope stability, seepage, erosion, earth retention, and mine tailings dams.

• Responsibilities include performing geotechnical computer modeling; specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; supervising in-situ and laboratory materials testing and installation of instrumentation for geotechnical assessment.

• Construction project work also involves completion of geotechnical and civil engineering aspects of alternatives analyses, feasibility studies, forensic evaluations, and preparation of design plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.

• Technical evaluation work will focus on disposal cell cover performance evaluation, engineering design and construction quality assurance associated with radon barriers, rock rip-rap covers, and evapotranspiration (ET) covers.

 

Work experience, skills, and capabilities needed:

  • Field experience in overseeing and/or participating in geotechnical investigations and reviewing lab results.
  • Preparing geotechnical reports.
  • Preparing plans and specifications for earthwork construction projects.
  • Understanding of engineering principles, concepts, and techniques with knowledge of environmental regulations and local utility codes.
  • Skill and ability to perform complex professional tasks and to analyze and develop innovative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to recommend approaches for new and improved processes.
  • Ability to work with broad objectives, with latitude to determine the best way to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to lead certain aspects of a task or project.
  • Level of language skills, mathematical skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job.

 

Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency required:

  • Working knowledge and experience in geotechnical engineering is required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals In Engineering exam.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Xcel, Project preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Desirable qualifications, experience, or proficiencies of the ideal candidate:

  • Working knowledge and experience in geotechnical engineering is preferred.  
  • Additional working knowledge in earthwork, hydraulic, hydrology, and land development design is preferred.
  • Previous experience in UMTRCA disposal cells or landfill covers design and analysis is preferred.

 

Required Education and Years of Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Geotech, Civil, or Environmental Engineering with 3-5 years relevant experience.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

Work involves moving objects by exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job/occupation is rated for light work when it requires (1) a significant degree of walking or standing, (2) mostly sitting while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls, or (3) working when the weight of the materials is negligible.
