Position Summary

RSI is recruiting for a Graduate Intern – AS&T who will assist with reactive transport modeling being conducted under the Applied Studies and Technology Educational Collaboration initiative at DOE Office of Legacy Management (DOE LM) sites. This Graduate Intern is specifically needed to complete reactive transport modeling of prior tracer tests completed at the Riverton, Wyoming, Processing Site in the former tailings area (a portion of the whole site). This modeling will assist in determining site geochemical reactions and will be used in site-wide reactive transport modeling to select a future remedial strategy (could be natural flushing or an active remedy). Modeling work may include biotic or abiotic reactions.

Hiring Range: $21.00/hour to $25.00/hour. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Computer programming, including but not limited to Python and Fortran.
  • Determine the potential reactions (rock/water interactions) occurring at the former tailings area of the Riverton, WY, Processing site. This determination will be based on prior data. This effort should include any biotic reactions (microbiology) that might influence geochemistry and will be incorporated into the conceptual site model.
  • Complete reactive transport modeling (flow and geochemistry) of prior tracer testing data from the Riverton, WY, Processing site. This effort should include any biotic reactions (microbiology) that might influence the geochemistry.
  • Calibration of the modeling above using an automated calibration routine (e.g., PEST) with an inclusion of model uncertainty.
  • Ability to write publishable journal article(s) based essential duties and responsibilities listed above.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience

  • Master’s degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, Physics or a related field.
  • Ph.D. candidate preferred.
  • 0 years of relevant experience.
  • Some background in geochemistry and groundwater modeling preferred.

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • No professional certification required.

 

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Microsoft office including but not limited to Excel and Word.
  • Some experience in geochemical modeling and reactive transport modeling.

 

Clearance and Health Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check
  • Pre-placement Drug Screening
  • Fit for Duty Test (if applicable)

 

Essential Physical Requirements
