Rocky Flats is an Office of Legacy Management site within the Department of Energy. Site infrastructure was removed and the site was closed 20 years ago with regulatory agreements with EPA and CDPHE for long-term environmental sampling and maintenance activities. It’s an unoccupied site frequented by herds of elk and other wildlife located in the center of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.
Position Summary
RSI is recruiting for an Intern - Field Technician who will assist Rocky Flats Field Staff with field activities.
Job Title: Intern - Field Technician
Location(s): Westminster, CO
Status: Part-Time
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Hiring Range: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)
This position is required to travel 0% of the time. Work will be conducted in the Westminster office and at the Rocky Flats Site near the Westminster office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the following Rocky Flats Site field activities: groundwater monitoring and sampling, monitoring well maintenance, groundwater treatment system operation and maintenance, surface water monitoring and sampling, ecological activities, and other activities as needed.
- Perform proper documentation and data entry, assist with report writing as needed.
- Assist with installation of erosion controls repairs, Site inspections, and Site housekeeping.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience
- Completion of 50-60 credit hours prior to start of internship towards an undergraduate degree in Environmental, Geology, Hydrology, or related field.
- No minimum years of experience required.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Driver’s License.
- No professional certification required.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Microsoft office including but not limited to Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Use of power and hand tools.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and walk on rough, hilly terrain.
- Comfortable in remote settings with wilderness conditions (animals, snakes, spiders, bees, wasps, other biting or stinging insects, etc.) and without ready access to public amenities (no utilities – working on undeveloped land). Although close to Denver, Rocky Flats is considered a remote setting.

Essential Physical Requirements
Medium: Work involves moving objects by exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an above-negligible amount and up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for light work.
