Job Title: Intern - AS&T Educational Collaboration

Location(s): Westminster, CO

Status: Temporary – 90 days or less

Anticipated Start date: May 20, 2024

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $15 - $16/hr.

This Internship is under the AS&T Educational Collaboration initiative. This Intern will assist with environmental research being conducted at DOE Office of Legacy Management (DOE LM) sites by reviewing and evaluating existing analytical (water chemistry) data to discover patterns and relationships.

Primary responsibilities and essential functions:

  • Review, evaluate, and assess available analytical (chemical) data representing concentrations of different per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water.
  • Identify meaningful patterns that may relate to spatial, temporal, or environmental conditions such as the effects of flow conditions in surface water, water level in groundwater, or location along a groundwater flow path; basic geochemical conditions (such as water pH); seasonality; indications of certain PFAS transforming into other PFAS; and so on.
  • Develop graphical representations of data that illustrate the proposed patterns and relationships.
  • Prepare paper and deliver presentation summarizing findings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency required:

  • Ability to analyze datasets, evaluate numerical data, and construct charts and graphics using common software such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, particularly PFAS, preferred.

Required Education and Years of Experience:

  • Completion of 60 credit hours prior to start of internship towards an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or another related STEM field.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

The employee must remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time. This position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. The person in this position frequently communicates with others who have inquiries. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.  Constantly works inside an office environment. Frequently moves documents and objects weighing up to 10 pounds.  Must be able to observe and learn technical material and emails.
