Job Title: Instrument and Controls Telemetry Field Technician

Location(s): Grand Junction, CO

Status: Full-Time

FLSA: Exempt

Hiring Range: $55,000 - $65,000/yr. (The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

RSI EnTech, LLC is recruiting for an Instrument and Controls Telemetry Field Technician who will function as one of a small team of technicians (2-3) responsible for operation and maintenance of a remote telemetry environmental monitoring network installed at several DOE Legacy Management sites located across the United States. Management and maintenance of this network, referred to as the System Operations and Analysis at Remote Sites (SOARS) requires knowledge of environmental sensors, low voltage electronics, solar power, batteries, groundwater pumps, and a basic understanding of data communication networks. This position will have a focus on field work, data entry, and data grading.

 

This position is required to travel 25% to 50% of the time.

 

Primary responsibilities and essential functions:

  • Review data collected by field equipment in a web portal, quality check incoming data and assign grades for data quality.
  • Communicate with subject matter experts and site leads to describe how collected data relates to in-the-field variables.
  • Travel to Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management sites (nationwide, primarily in the western US) to install, maintain, and replace equipment. (25-50% travel.)
  • Coordinate and schedule field work needed to install and keep equipment operational.
  • Write and maintain standard operating procedures. Perform work to procedures.
  • Develop work specific Safety and Health documents (job safety analysis, all applicable forms for work authorization i.e., confined space entry, penetration permit, ladder inspection, heat stress, etc.).
  • Operate and ensure maintenance of vehicles according to training and GSA standards.
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, replace defective components or parts using hand tools or power tools, working with manufacturers or field representatives as necessary to procure replacement parts.
  • Select electronics equipment, components, or systems to meet functional specifications and provide cost estimates to stakeholders.
  • Compile and maintain records such as schematics, that document installed equipment.
  • Integrate software or hardware components, using computer, microprocessor, or control architecture.
  • Procure parts and maintain inventory and related documentation.
  • Participate in training or continuing education activities to stay abreast of industry advances.
  • Install or maintain electrical control systems, sensors, or electrical equipment, including data loggers, meteorologic stations, transducers, flow meters, or programmable logic controllers.
  • Maintain equipment logs that record performance problems, repairs, calibrations, or tests.
  • Inspect components of equipment for accurate assembly and installation or for defects, such as loose connections or frayed wires.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, such as checking, cleaning, calibrating, or repairing equipment, to detect and prevent problems.
  • Calibrate testing instruments and installed or repaired equipment to prescribed specifications.
  • Consult with stakeholders to plan layout of equipment or to resolve problems in system operation or maintenance.
  • Study blueprints, schematics, manuals, or other specifications to determine installation procedures.
  • Coordinate efforts with other workers involved in installing or maintaining equipment or components.
  • Determine feasibility of using standardized equipment or develop specifications for equipment to perform required functions.
  • Send defective units to the manufacturer or to a specialized repair shop for repair.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior Telemetry Field Technicians.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Work experience, skills, and capabilities required:

  •  Must have a safety conscious mindset.
  •  Proficiency using MS Word and MS Excel to create documentation, analyze data, and track   work.
  •  Familiarity and comfortability with working outdoors.
  •  Intermediate to advanced knowledge of foundational computer skills.
  •  Ability to work as part of a team to accomplish tasks safely and effectively.
  • Ability to independently track and organize work tasks to meet established objectives, using discretion in performing duties.
  •  Experience with data entry and aptitude to think analytically.
  •  Experience in producing formal documentation (e.g. theses, scientific reports, scholarly papers, environmental reports).
  •  Ability to take meticulous field notes.
  •  Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  •  Familiarity with basic scientific methodologies and concepts.
  •  Desire to learn instrumentation and electronics for environmental monitoring.
  •  Desire to learn about environmental science.
  •  A willingness to learn new concepts and skills related to this position.

  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency desired:

  •  Familiarity with working under a comprehensive Job Safety program.
  •  Experience with low-voltage electrical systems (batteries and solar).
  •  Exposure to Campbell Scientific LoggerNet software and hardware.
  •  Experience reviewing data to identify and solve equipment installation issues.
  •  Awareness of Aquatic Informatics AQUARIUS software or other environmental data software.
  •  Experience in fields related to environmental instrumentation/data collection, a plus.
  •  Education or experience with PLCs, programing logic, and troubleshooting data capture logic in data logger programs.
  • Basic understanding of programming syntax.
  • Experience configuring telecommunication equipment (400mHz, 900 mHz, or GHz and cellular) for remote telemetry.
  • A.S. in Instrumentation and Controls, Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or similar.
  • Familiarity with working to formalized work control standards and documentation.

 

Required Education and Years of Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in STEM related field and 0-5 years of experience. In lieu of a Bachelors’ Degree, a

combination of relevant experience and an associate degree may also be considered.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

Medium Work Category - The employee exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

Able to travel on uneven ground for several miles (2-4 miles) per day under adverse weather conditions. Much of the traveling is up and down hills.  Able to work in hot, cold, windy, and sometimes wet conditions.  Able to work alone for several hours per day in the field.

The employee is regularly required handle or feel, to reach, and communicate. The employee is frequently required to move about and maintain various positions. The employee must have the ability to perceive the environment and observe technical material and emails.
