Location: Monticello, UT

Hiring Range: $44K - $119K per year (Depending on education, experience, and location)

Status: Full-Time,

FLSA: Exempt

Job Description:

The Monticello Environmental Scientist will be responsible for, but not limited to operating and maintaining the Monticello site, assisting, and taking direction from the Site Operation Lead on day-to-day activities. Perform site operations and maintenance tasks. Monitor and inspect site operations and perform project-wide inspections. Perform radiological surveys as per the site's Long-Term Surveillance and Maintenance. The Monticello Site Environmental Scientist will also participate in various project planning, implementation, and close-out activities.  25 – 50% of the time will be spent in the field and Travel is required.

Primary responsibilities and essential functions:

  • Take daily work direction from the Site Operations Lead and will work as a member of a multi-disciplined team.
  • Have computer skills in spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Follow verbal and written direction.
  • Capable of performing assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Successfully complete all assigned training.
  • Perform site operations and maintenance tasks.
  • Monitor and inspect site operations and perform project-wide inspections.
  • Perform radiological surveys as per the site's Long-Term Surveillance and Maintenance.
  • Participate in various project planning, implementation, and close-out activities.
  • Support other contractor personnel's work at the site.
  • Provide work oversight for subcontractors (safety briefings, training, and daily logs).
  • Participate in safety reviews and safe work practices as per the DOE Integrated Safety Management Systems, IWCP, and VP programs.
  • Interface with stakeholders, clients, site visitors, and regulators in a professional manner

Work experience, skills, and capabilities needed:

  • The employee shall have experience with plumbing and mechanical systems, operating electronic equipment, general site maintenance tasks.
  • General construction experience including work oversight, basic knowledge of light, medium, and heavy-duty construction equipment.
  • Experience operating UTV’s and hauling UTV’s.
  • Experience loading, unloading and towing utility trailers.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather on a daily basis (rain, snow, heat, cold, etc.)
  • Experience with excavations is desired
  • Experience using hand tools, portable generators, motors, pumps and battery operated tools.

 

Technical knowledge, certifications/licenses, and software proficiency required:

  • Knowledge on operation of water piping, water pumps, PLC trouble shooting, maintenance techniques, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Software proficiency: Microsoft products i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook

Required Education and Years of Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science.  BS in Construction management or engineering experience is desired.  Experience in lieu of education may be considered with 0-5 years’ job-related experience.
 

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to work in high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level may be loud due to equipment or machinery used.

The employee exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

Able to travel on uneven ground for several miles (2-4 miles) per day under adverse weather conditions. Much of the traveling is up and down hills.  Able to work in hot, cold, windy, and sometimes wet conditions.  Able to work alone for several hours per day in the field.

The employee is regularly required handle or feel, to reach, and communicate. The employee is frequently required to move about and maintain various positions. The employee must have the ability to perceive the environment and observe technical material and emails.
